Master in Teaching English in Basic Education
(Non-Thesis, MTEBE)
Master in Teaching English in Basic Education (MTEBE), one of the non-thesis SIGS programs of the College of Education, 开元真人-Manila, focuses on the principles/theories, and methodology governing English Language Teaching (ELT) in the primary and secondary levels. Courses engage students in critical and reflective thinking through cognitive and metacognitive activities and include theories on psychology of language learning, foundations of language education, language assessment and evaluation, curriculum design and materials preparation, academic reading and writing, the teaching of literature, and several units of language teaching methodology involving the four macro skills.
听Objectives of the Program
MTEBE aims to achieve the following:
- help students construct their knowledge and skills, and develop cognitive and metacognitive strategies or approaches, in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in the primary and secondary levels;
- produce ESL teachers who are communicatively competent in both oral and written forms;
- hone students鈥� ability to design ESL curricula; and
- prepare students for their future mission to teach English communication and comprehension skills effectively in order to achieve global competitiveness
Admission Requirements
Target participants are those teaching in the primary and secondary levels in certain private schools outside Metro Manila. They are to be nominated by their respective schools according to the following criteria:
- Must be education degree holders or at least holders of TCP (preferably licensed teachers)
- Have taught English for at least one year
- Not more than 50 years old
(A grade of not less than 2.0 in each course is required for the students to be retained in the program).听

ENX622M Grammar for English Teachers
Deals with grammatical structure of English and innovative methods of teaching English grammar; also includes practice exercises that develop students鈥� writing skills.
ENX617M听Speech and Oral Communication for Teachers
Reviews the sounds and sound patterns of English and trains students to produce and discriminate critical sounds of the language; focuses on the development of communication skills for effective teaching; and deals with the study of practical application of principles of speech and oral communication in second language teaching.
ENX535M Foundations of Language Education
An introduction to phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and other fields of study involving language.
ENX631M Psychology of Language Learning
Discusses psychological and linguistic issues and problems in first and second language learning.
ENX501M Academic Reading and Writing 1
The first part of an intensive English academic and writing course; focuses on the review of basic reading and writing skills and their application in the preparation of short academic papers such as technical definitions, descriptions, summary, critiques, and non-prose forms; emphasizes the mastery of effective reading strategies, effective use of rhetorical and organizational features of academic writing, and proper documentation.
ENX502M Academic Reading and Writing 2
The second part of the intensive English academic reading and writing course; focuses on the writing of a research report, with emphasis on the different rhetorical moves and the linguistic features that realize these moves; emphasizes the observance of integrity in writing and research.
ENX622M Methodology of Teaching Listening
Explores a range of approaches and techniques in teaching listening skills including comprehension; includes both historical and theoretical perspectives on recent methods and approaches, as well as opportunities for practical application; helps teachers develop a personal but principled methodology of their own which will be appropriate in the context of their respective teaching situations; expects students to do a good teaching demonstration on listening and display their ability to challenge their respective students to think critically.
ENX618M Methodology of Teaching Speaking
Familiarizes students with a range of approaches and techniques in teaching oral communication skills; provides varied opportunities to challenge students to develop a personal but principled methodology of their own which will be appropriate in the context of their respective teaching situations; expects students to do a good teaching demonstration on speaking and display their ability to challenge their respective students to think critically.
ENX619M Methodology of Teaching Reading
Discusses historical and theoretical perspectives on most recent methods and approaches in teaching reading skills, including reading strategies, to help students design their own personal but principled methodology based on the context of their respective teaching environment; expects students to do a good teaching demonstration on reading and display their ability to challenge their respective students to think critically.

Discusses historical and theoretical perspectives, as well as issues relative to the teaching of writing; helps students design their own personal but principled methodology based on the context of their respective teaching environment; expects students to do a good teaching demonstration on writing and display their ability to challenge their respective students to think critically.
ENX621M Teaching Literature
Includes advanced approaches to teaching literature at the secondary level with emphasis on teaching literary appreciation.
ENX622M Curriculum Design
Familiarizes students with the principles in developing a curriculum and challenging them to design one based on the needs of their respective clientele. The project paper in this course may be used for the Oral Comprehensive Exams.
ENX623M Materials Preparation
Acquaints students with the principles involved in the production of their own instructional materials based on the needs of their respective clientele. The project paper in this course may be used for the Oral Comprehensive Exams.
ENX640M LanguageAssessment听
Covers both the traditional and alternative modes of assessment in an English class; includes hands-on training on planning, designing, critiquing, and administering language tests.听 听听
