The BS Math program with specialization in Computer Applications is a degree developed in response the demands of the science and technology sector while still retaining the rigors of a mathematics degree.聽 It is compliant with the standards set by the Commission on Higher Education.
In response to several factors, the program has been revised to cover 12 terms, up from the original ten terms with a summer practicum term.聽 One factor is the recent move of the Philippine Educational system from a 10-year basic education cycle to a 12-year cycle, commonly referred to as the K-12 system.聽 The transition to K-12 brought with it corresponding changes in the general education curriculum and the migration of some introductory level college courses to the senior high school level.
In view of the changes brought about by the transition to K-12, De La Salle initiated its own review and revision of programs to make it more attuned to the needs of today鈥檚 students and more competitive even in the international level.聽 The changes also addressed keeping our programs in line with recognized international standards.
Another factor that precipitated the need to revise our offering is the release of CHED Memorandum Order No. 48 Series of 2017, on the policies, standards, and guidelines for the BS Math and BS Applied Math programs.聽 Making sure that we remain compliant with the new provisions of the CMO, minor changes were also incorporated in the degree program.
Finally, the department also wanted to address the steadily decreasing demand for this degree program.聽 Thus, in consultation with the College of Computer Science, the computing components of the program were tweaked to align it with the emerging field of data science.
